The world of video games has always sparked my interest and for me, dwelling in that world is equally as exciting as in the real world. Video games invite you to experience an environment devoid of the limits of our reality. Right now we inhabit two realities, the virtual reality of the computer and the reality outside of it.
The video game environment is at its core made out of basic forms called polygons. The smallest and simplest form is the triangle which is a contradiction to the basic forms we are used to in our environment, the squares, circles and organic forms.
Uppbrot is an ode to those two realities. The basic form of the virtual reality, the triangle, is placed in our real world in a three dimensional shape to break up the square environment we are so used to and to place the triangle equal to the other basic forms.
Our environment is mostly made up of squares and that is clearly visible in the buildings, furniture and other objects around us. By situating Uppbrot in this square environment I am breaking the rules that seem to dominate our visual world. The form contradicts the space it inhabits and thus provokes what we are so accustomed to.
Uppbrot is a formstudy that has great potential in the future since it is a versatile form, that with function could embelish any space it would inhabit. The tying and threading are also completely handmade and after some research I have discovered a simple and charming way of tying the form together.
Uppbrot is a metaphor for myself. I am the connection between these two realities and by tying Uppbrot together I have situated myself between the computer and the manmade environment.
Uppbrot was my graduation project from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in the spring of 2013.
Poppskál innblásinn af chindogu, þar sem fáránleikinn fær að koma í ljós. skálin var unnin í Listaháskóla Íslands vorið 2011 og snerist áfanginn um að læra postulíngerð með möguleika og takmarkanir efnisins í huga. leikur að skala og skemmtun koma saman í skál sem er í laginu eins og poppkorn.

Popcornbowl inspired by chindogu, where absurdity shines through. The bowl was made while studying at the Iceland Academy of the Arts in the spring of 2011 and in said course we were learning about porcelain making with the limits and possibilities of the material in mind. Play on scale and fun come together in a bowl that is shaped like a popcorn.

A project made in a course taught in the Iceland Academy of the Arts in the fall of 2011. The object of the course was to create quick sketches in three-dimensional form from words provided by the teacher. Using one of the words, we were supposed to make a near perfect prototype to learn thinking about details, organizing our time and appreciating craftmanship. The origami steps were inspired by the words reach/two-step and the paperfolding ways of origami.

Inter-disciplinary collaboration between product design students at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and the staff and users of the OB/GYN at the Landspítali National University Hospital. A course completed in the spring of 2012 where we learned how to use experience design and inter-disciplinary collaboration in a real life setting. Students were divided into groups and each group researched three divisions of the OB/GYN by looking, feeling, learning and listening as well as talking to the departments’ staff and users. Condition of the OB/GYN was examined and researched and experience design was used to improve and reorganize the departments environment and experience for the staff and users. Organization of rooms, wayfinding and atmosphere of the department was examined and improved in an attempt to make the department more open, more intimate and friendly. Evidently only the departments’ enviroment and appearance needed such change since the staff is especially lovely, friendly and helpful in every way. Final results were presented as a big poster to users and guests of the hospital as well as staff and hospital directors in a hallway between the Children’s Hospital and the OB/GYN department. The poster was allowed to hang there for about six months. I worked at reorganizing the rooms of the departments and was the project manager when time came to gather all the information together for the final presentation.

I wanted to create an object that required no assembly but would still have free form and not be a two dimensional object. The object is really one flat surface that is bent at certain angles and thus becomes a bowl. The basic form is a multiplied triangle. The bowl was made while studying at Iðnskólinn í Hafnarfirði in the fall of 2009.
Plaköt unninn fyrir Lansímann; hóp starfsmanna innan fjarskiptafyrirtækisins Síminn. Hópurinn hittist reglulega og heldur lanmót þar sem starfsmenn Símans hittast á einum stað, spila tölvuleiki sín á milli og keppa í hópum. Innblástur plakatanna er komin frá persónum úr tölvuleiknum Team Fortress 2 og tók ég séreinkenni þeirra og gerði úr því minimalísk plaköt. Plakötin voru prentuð út og sett upp víðsvegar um fyrirtækið sem auglýsingar fyrir lanmót Lansímans.

Posters made for Lansíminn; a group of employees at the telecommunications company Síminn. The group meets up regularly to play videogames in a tournament where groups play against each other. Inspiration for the posters came from characters in the video game Team Fortress 2 and I took their characteristic features and from those made minimalistic posters. The posters were printed and hung around Síminn’s workplace as advertisement for Lansíminns lan tournament.

A necklace in the shape of a moustache, designed and made while studying in Iðnskólinn í Hafnarfirði in the fall of 2009. Later I contacted the Icelandic Cancer Society about selling the necklace for Mottumars or Moustachemarch (similar to Movember) and half of the profits was donated to the cancer society. It was sold at selected stores in reykjavík, iceland in march of 2012 and were sold again in march of 2013. Packaging and appearance were made in collaboration with Ása Bryndís Gunnarsdóttir who drew the face and Sigrún Sæmundsen who did the graphics and layout of the packaging. The project was funded with grants from a few companies and well-wishers. Family and friends helped with the products assembly and packaging during one weekend in february of 2012. It is possible to change the length of the string of the necklace and thus place it under your nose as if you are sporting a moustache. The idea behind selling the necklace to aid the Icelandic Cancer Society during Mottumars came from the fact that women wanted to take part in the campaign but could not because of their lack of beard growth.

Outdoor furniture made from high tech materials manifactured with a low tech method. Made in a course at the Iceland Academy of the Arts in the spring of 2012 where the objective was to merge together materials and methods of two companies into one object. Right now there is only the one table but stools could be made in the same form and from the same materials to create an outdoor furniture line. The fiberglass is cast into an aluminium mold and a part of that mold is left in with the fiberglass. The aluminium gives the object strength and weighs it down as well. Making the object I worked with two companies; Stjörnublikk and Trefjar.

Gulleggið or the Golden Egg is an innovation competition held annually on behalf of Innovit. Every year a new trophy is designed and presented to the competition’s winner. 2012’s trophy was designed and made by myself and the egg itself is made from maple, the top is painted with golden paint and sits on a plate made from plastic. The idea behind the egg’s form is taking the natural and making it synthetic and rough.
